Despite being viewed by some as antiquated and old, email is still alive and well. We wrote a blog post discussing the topic a few months back. For this post, we wanted to take the idea one step further and explore the ways people use email in the modern era. How do you use it?

Assuming you use email on a regular basis, you are not alone. There were just over four billion unique email users online in 2021. The number is expected to grow to at least 4.6 billion by 2025. That amounts to more than half of the world’s total population.

That’s not all. More than three hundred billion email messages are sent every single day. It is clear that anyone who thinks email is dead doesn’t know the numbers. Not only is it not dead, but email is also more productive now than ever before.

A Brief History of Email

Before we get into how you utilize email, a brief history of the technology is in order. The first iteration of the email concept was developed in the 1960s as a means of communicating electronically. It was designed to be an internal system only.

What we now associate with modern email – think ‘youremail@yourcarrier.com’ – was developed as part of the ARPANET system in the 1970s. So yes, email has been around for 50 years, at least.

Personal Use Only

For some of us, email is a technology that is used only for personal purposes. Perhaps you are a Blazing Hog 4G rural internet customer content to send and receive email messages mostly from friends and family. That is all you do with it.

You might go above and beyond the personal to interact with some of your favorite companies via email. For instance, perhaps you’ve signed up for several email newsletters. Those newsletters keep you informed of the happenings at the businesses you frequent.

Email for Marketing Purposes

If you own a small business, it’s a safe bet that you probably use email for marketing purposes. Any small business that doesn’t utilize email marketing is throwing away an invaluable resource that has proven itself worthwhile over the last several decades.

Incidentally, those email newsletters you receive are an integral part of the marketing plans of the companies behind them. The companies send out their newsletters in hopes that you will keep reading them. There more often you read, the more you remain connected to that company.

Email for Work Purposes

For most of us, email is used for both personal and work purposes. Almost all of us have a personal email address utilized for friends and family. But we also have separate work addresses dedicated to that purpose. Utilizing email for work is where things can get a bit sticky.

Work emails can inadvertently take up a lot of our time. Getting stuck in a seemingly endless email conversation with colleagues can chew up valuable time that would otherwise be spent on getting actual work done.
